US embassy cable - 03KUWAIT1217

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

Classified By: DCM Frank C. Urbancic for reasons 1.5 (A), (B) and (D)

1. (S/NF) Post has investigated rumors of an explosion and
fire at the Rawdatain oil field in northern Kuwait, and found
them to be untrue. KPC and U.S. military sources confirm
that an apparent Iraqi missile did recently land in an
unpopulated area south of the Rawdatain and west of the
Sabriya fields, but the impact had no effect on oil
facilities or operations.

2. (C) Post is also investigating unconfirmed reports of an
unscheduled shutdown of Gathering Center 20 in the Wafra
field (shared with Saudi Arabia). There is nothing to
suggest at this point that the shutdown is serious or long
lasting.

3. (C) Following is the unedited data set provided by the
Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) production on April 2,

2.(C) Explanatory Comments:

Wafra Joint Operations refer to onshore concessions in
Saudi-Kuwait divided zone operated by Saudi Arabian Texaco
(SAT). R/B refers to the two producing reservoirs -- Ratawi
and Burgan.

KOC is Kuwait Oil Company

KNPC is Kuwait National Petroleum Corporation

KGOC is the Kuwaiti successor to Arabian Oil Company (AOC),
which previously operated a concession in the offshore
portions of the Saudi-Kuwait divided zone. AOC still
operates the fields under a service agreement.

KEC refers to Kuwait Export Crude, the country's export
blend. Salt PTB refers to pounds of salt per thousand
barrels of crude oil.
