The Embassy received a letter from National League for Democracy (NLD) Chairman U Aung Shwe on December 7, 2005 expressing gratitude to the USG and to Ambassador Bolton for successfully securing a consensus at the UN Security Council on Burma. A copy of the original has been pouched to EAP/MLS. 2. Text of the letter is as follows: National League for Democracy No 97/B West Shwegondaing Street Bahan Township, Rangoon December 5, 2005 Ms. Shari Villarosa Charge d'Affaires Embassy of the United States of America Madame, I, on behalf of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National League for Democracy (NLD) with the exception of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary and U Tin Oo, Vice Chairman, both of whom are under house detention, would like to express our very deeply felt gratitude and appreciation through you to your Government and His Excellency Mr. John R Bolton for convincing the Security Council of the United Nations of the seriousness of the present situation of Burma and also for trying against all odds to successfully secure a consensus among all members of the Security Council to hold a hearing from the Secretary General on the deteriorating situation of our country.
