(U) In response to reftel demarche, MFA Deputy Director General for Economic Cooperation and Multilateral Finance Massimo Leggeri November 18 told A/ECMIN and Econoff that the Government of Italy (GOI) has not yet decided whether to support the Mexican or Polish candidate. Leggeri believes this decision will be made November 22. 2. (U) A/ECMIN stressed our strong support for Mr. Gurria because of his vision for the organization and our belief that he would make a good Secretary General. Leggeri said the GOI also has a high appreciation for Mr. Gurria as a candidate. We will follow-up with Leggeri after November 22 and report any developments. SPOGLI
