US embassy cable - 05MANAMA1635

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

SUBJECT: MFA REQUESTS INFORMATION ON REPORTED GTMO SUICIDE
ATTEMPT

REF: MANAMA 1620

Classified By: Ambassador William T. Monroe. Reason: 1.4 (b)(d)

1. (C) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a diplomatic note
to the Embassy, dated November 2, noting newspaper reports of
the attempted suicide by Bahraini detainee at Guantanamo Juma
Al-Dossary (reftel), and requesting that the Embassy inquire
into the veracity of this report and advise the Ministry of
its findings. On November 6, Minister of State for Foreign
Affairs told the press that the GOB had asked the U.S. about
the suicide attempt through official channels and was
awaiting a reply. Earlier, the brother of Al-Dossary had
told the press he doubted Al-Dossary had attempted to commit
suicide, saying it was against his character.

2. (U) Action request: Embassy would appreciate language to
be used in a diplomatic note to the MFA to respond to its
inquiry regarding the veracity of the reported suicide
attempt.
