US embassy cable - 05SOFIA1892

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

The Republic of Bulgaria November 4, 2005
The President

Dear Mr. President,

I would like to express my appreciation for your
hospitality during my visit to the U.S.A, as well as through
you to thank the American people for the warm welcome and
hospitality.

I am glad we discussed important issues of mutual
interest and above all the opportunities for further
elaboration on the strategic partnership between our two
states. The shared values of freedom and democracy, our
relations as NATO allies, and our personal contact are an
excellent basis for the further development of the ties
between the Republic of Bulgaria and the United States in all
spheres.

I am convinced that the political, military, economic
cooperation and the cultural and educational exchange between
our two countries, as well as the interaction within the
framework of the international forums will become more active
after our conversations in the White House. I use this
opportunity to confirm the intention of the Republic of
Bulgaria to continue generating security on the Balkans and
in the Black Sea region. I would like to assure you once
again that we are on your side in the fight against world
terrorism.

I rely also on your personal support for Bulgaria,s EU
membership as well as for the steady development of the
economic cooperation between our two countries and the
increase of the American investments in Bulgaria.

I would like to thank you for your personal engagement
and for the unconditional support of the United States of
America for finding a solution in the case with the Bulgarian
medics in Libya. I believe this support will continue in the
future as well, until a final and just decision is reached on
this extremely sensitive issue for Bulgarian society.

I avail myself of the opportunity to reiterate my
invitation to you to visit the Republic of Bulgaria and again
express my conviction that this visit would give an
invaluable impetus for accomplishing our common goals.

/s/
Georgi Purvanov
