UNCLAS HELSINKI 001162 SIPDIS STAE FOR IO, EUR/NB E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: FI, UNGA, UNSC SUBJECT: FINLAND SUPPORTS BUERGENTHAL ICJ RE-ELECTION REF: SECSTATE 199724 (U) Poloff delivered reftel demarche and diplomatic note to Marja Lehto, Director of International Legal Affairs at the MFA. Lehto said that Finland appreciates Judge Buergenthal's long record of excellent service to the international community and strongly supports his re-election to the ICJ. She added that Finland would have joined other countries in nominating Buergenthal, but that Finland also plans to nominate an ICC justice this year and did not want to nominate two candidates in so short a time period.
