US embassy cable - 05WARSAW3732

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

1. (U) Poland reacted very quickly and strongly to Iranian
President Ahmadi-Nejad's October 25 statement that Israel
should be "wiped off the map" (reftel). The Polish MFA
spokesman issued on October 27 a strong condemnation of
Ahmadi-Nejad's remarks. Text follows in para 3 below.

2. (C) Pol-Mil Chief provided reftel demarche to Witold
Waszczykowski, Deputy Director for Iran in the MFA Department
for Middle East and Africa. Waszczykowski said that the GOP
was taking Ahmadi-Nejad's statement very seriously. The
Polish delegation had presented the MFA statement at the
October 28 PSC meeting in Brussels, with the strong
recommendation that the text be issued as part of the
official Ministers' communique following the November 7 GAERC.

3. (U) BEGIN TEXT.

Information regarding the statement by the President of Iran
on the subject of Israel

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland
received with disbelief news agency reports that, during the
October 26 conference in Tehran entitled "The World without
Zionism," the President of Iran spoke out in favor of the
"destruction of Israel." Such statements are unacceptable
(in relations) between states. They violate international
law and custom. They encourage hatred and hostility, in
flagrant contrast to the atmosphere of Ramadan, the month of
peace.

The Ministry expresses its hope that the aforementioned news
reports do not reflect the actual content and intent of the
speech of the President of Iran, including the foundations of
Iranian foreign policy.

The Ministry awaits appropriate explanations from the Iranian
authorities, on the basis of which, after having acquainted
itself with the authorized text of the aforementioned speech,
it will take prospective further actions. In order to obtain
the appropriate explanations, the Ambassador of Iran was
called into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

END TEXT.
