UNCLAS LAGOS 001662 SIPDIS SENSITIVE BUT UNCLASSIFIED - HANDLE ACCORDINGLY TRANSPORTATION FOR FAA DAKAR PLS PASS TO FAA REP ED JONES ROME PLS PASS TO TSA REP JOHN HALINSKI FOR DS/IP/AF E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: CASC, EAIR, NI, ASEC, PREL SUBJECT: SITREP #8: CRASH OF BELLVIEW FLIGHT B3210; OCTOBER 24, 7:50 PM (LOCAL) REF: LAGOS 1660 AND PREVIOUS 1. (SBU) Mission's consular response team (CRT) returned to Lagos at 1530 (local time) and will deploy again tomorrow. CRT confirmed that while the overall security climate at the site has improved, there is still fairly open public access, which may compromise evidence. Separately, the Red Cross Secretary General told us excavation was imminent and that SIPDIS the Red Cross planned to begin fumigating the site tomorrow. The Red Cross, he said, will transport body remains to the Ota Hospital for safekeeping. 2. (SBU) Embassy Abuja will liaise with the GON on steps needed to preserve evidence to include possibly delaying the crater's excavation. BROWNE
