UNCLAS NEW DELHI 008150 SIPDIS SENSITIVE E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: PREL, PGOV, KDEM, KPAO, IN, India-Iraq SUBJECT: IRAQ: SEEKING PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR REFERENDUM REF: STATE 189909 (SBU) India will issue a supportive statement as soon as results of the Iraqi referendum are made public, MEA Joint Secretary (Gulf) Sanjay Singh told us on October 20. SIPDIS PolCouns double tracked this demarche with Middle East Envoy C. Gharekhan, who offered the same assurance. Both expressed satisfaction at the high level of Iraqi participation in the referendum. Ambassador Gharakan expressed particular admiration for Ambassador Khalilzad's role in helping to achieve this successful outcome. BLAKE
