SUBJECT: EGYPT "FAVORABLE" ON BUERGENTHAL ICJ CANDIDACY

(SBU) Post delivered ref B demarche October 12 to MFA Office
Director for United Nations Affairs and Nominations, Hany
Saleem. Saleem stated that he would convey the USG request
to the Minister, and opined that Egypt would "most likely
support" the reelection of Judge Thomas Bluementhal to the
International Court of Justice in The Hague. Later the same
day, Saleem contacted poloff to share that he had been in
touch with the Foreign Minister's Cabinet staff and had
received a "favorable message" from the Cabinet in response
to our request that the GOE support the Buergenthal candidacy.
