Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

UNCLAS GENEVA 002378 SIPDIS IO FOR MARK LAGON, IO/SHA, DRL/MLA E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: PREL, PHUM, MX, UNHRC-1, Human Rights SUBJECT: MEXICO WITHDRAWS CANDIDACY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CHAIR 1. Mission has received note OGE04632 from the Mission of Mexico, dated September 29, withdrawing Mexico's note of August 19 announcing Mexico's candidacy to chair the next Human Rights Commission. The note has been faxed to IO/SHA and WHA/MEX. 2. Begin text: The Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva presents its compliments to the Permanent Mission of the United States of America and has the honour to recall its note OGE0417 dated August 19, in which it presented the candidature of the Government of Mexico to the Chair of the 62nd session of the Commission on Human Rights. In this regard, bearing in mind the 2005 World Summit Outcome adopted at the High Level Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, held from 14 to 16 September, in which it was decided to create a Human Rights Council, the Government of Mexico underscores the importance of concentrating efforts in the reform process and in the establishment of the Council. Taking this into account, and further noting that the Mexican candidature to the Chair of the Commission is not the only one, the Government of Mexico has decided to withdraw it and to fully gear its endeavours towards creating and setting in motion the Human Rights Council. The Permanent Mission of Mexico is pleased to convey the appreciation of its Government for the formal manifestation of support, as well as for the expressions of sympathy for its candidature, and reiterates its unwavering commitment to continue working for the promotion and protection of human rights on a priority basis. The Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations Office and the other International Organizations in Geneva avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Permanent Mission of the United States of America the assurances of its highest consideration.
