UNCLAS ABUJA 001870 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: ENRG, KNNP, AORC, TRGY, ECON, IAEA SUBJECT: IAEA SAFEGUARDS COMMITTEE DEMARCHE REF: STATE 159113 1. Embassy economic officer met on Sept. 7, 2005 with Director (EPA) of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Professor O. L. Hoeje and Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria Professor A. S. Sambo. 2. Econoff presented ref talking points on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) agreement to create a new Committee on Safeguards and Verification to consider ways and means to strengthen the safeguards system and welcoming suggestions for chairman of the new committee. 3. Professor Sambo said he would get back to Embassy if he came up with any individuals he thought should be nominated. Sambo reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to only peaceful nuclear energy projects and expressed a desire to work more closely with the United States in the future, particularly with the U.S. Department of Energy.
