UNCLAS OTTAWA 002938 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: CA, UNSC, UNGA SUBJECT: ICJ ELECTIONS DEMARCHE DELIVERED TO CANADA REF: SECSTATE 179062 1. (U) Poloff delivered points in reftel to Jeanette Sautner, Legal Officer in the Human Rights and Economic Law Division at Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC), on September 29. Sautner acknowledged previous receipt of the diplomatic note containing Judge Buergenthal's C.V. 2. (U) Sautner indicated that, while the final decision for Canada's five ICJ votes remains pending, Canada usually follows the recommendations of the Canadian National Group in the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The national group is comprised of four members: a Supreme Court justice, a member of the academic community, a legal practitioner and the legal advisor of FAC.
