US embassy cable - 05VIENNA3202

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

1. (C) On September 26, Economic Unit Chief delivered reftel
points to Johann Froehlich, Head of the MFA's Justice and
Home Affairs Division, urging Austria to support an EU
listing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LITE) as a
terrorist organization. Froehlich said that Austrian views
on LITE were similar to the USG position. Froehlich
emphasized that Austria "would not be a problem" within the
EU on efforts to designate LITE. He added that there was a
"small minority" of member states that continued to object to
the EU listing, arguing that listing would hamper the
Norwegian-led peace process.
