US embassy cable - 05ROME3187

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

1. The Italian military screens the criminal and security
background of all persons who join the armed forces.
Service members selected as candidates to U.S. sponsored
training programs undergo a rigorous selection process.
There is no credible evidence that the Italian military
establishment has committed human rights violations.

2. Since the Italian military has such an effective
screening program in place, mission considers the fact that
a member of the Italian armed forces has been selected for
U.S. sponsored training as sufficient to guarantee
compliance with U.S. screening requirements.

3. There is no reason to expect any change in this
situation. Unless advised otherwise, please assume that the
Italian screening process remains sufficient to ensure
compliance with U.S. requirements.
