UNCLAS LIMA 003838 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: KNNP, AORC, TRGY, ENRG, PE SUBJECT: IAEA COMMITTEE ON SAFEGUARDS AND VERIFICATION (PERU) REF: SECSTATE 159113 1. Polcouns delivered the demarche on the IAEA Committee on Safeguards and Verification (Reftel) to Julio Garro, the Foreign Ministry's Director of Multilateral Affairs, on 9/2. Garro expressed satisfaction on the creation of the Committee. He added that while Peru will leave the IAEA Board at the end of the month, it will continue to have a keen interest in IAEA Board developments as it expects to win a seat on the UN Security Council in 2006, and wants to be fully briefed should the question of Iran's compliance with nuclear non-proliferation obligations come up before the UNSC. 2. Per Reftel para 6, Embassy is unaware of a Peruvian official capable of effectively chairing the new IAEA Committee on Safeguards and Verification. STRUBLE
