US embassy cable - 05VIENNA2956

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

1. Ambassador contacted Austrian Foreign Ministry Secretary
General Johannes Kyrle (in the absence of the Foreign
Minister) on September 4 to convey ref (a) and (b) needs list
and secretary's statement on Hurricane Katrina. On behalf of
the Minister, Kyrle undertook to work on supplying U.S. needs
immediately.
2. Kyrle reiterated Austrian offers of specific water
purification, decontamination and urban search and rescue
assistance (ref c). The Austrian military has worked 24-7
through the weekend to plan deployments of these specific
capabilities, if U.S. emergency services believe there is a
need for them.
3. Embassy officials will meet with Austrian government
officials on September 5 to review the state of play on these
offers.
