C O N F I D E N T I A L PANAMA 001584 SIPDIS DEPARTMENT FOR WHA/CEN E.O. 12958: DECL: 07/26/2015 TAGS: PREL, KUNR, PGOV, PM, UNSC, UNGA, POLITICS & FOREIGN POLICY SUBJECT: PANAMA ON UNSC REFORM: RESPONSE TO DEMARCHE AGAINST G-4 RESOLUTION REF: STATE 137602 Classified By: Charge D'Affairs Jon Danilowicz for reasons 1.4(b),(d) (C) On July 26, POL Counselor delivered reftel demarche to Foreign Minister Samuel Lewis and discussed the GOP's position on a possible G-4 resolution vote. POL Counselor urged a vote against or abstention from the G-4 resolution. Lewis said that he was familiar with the USG position on the G-4 resolution and on UN reform, although he would not confirm Panama's position on G-4. He said that he had recently spoken with Panama's Perm Rep, Ambassador Ricardo Alberto Arias, in New York. According to Arias, Brazil's Perm Rep, Ambassador Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg, said there would be no vote on the G-4 resolution this week. Embassy will report any updates to the Department. DANILOWICZ
