Econ staff visited an upscale supermarket in San Salvador to identify examples of foods for sale using names included in the list in Reftel para. 5. The following were identified: Mozzarella (made in El Salvador), Pecorino (Guatemala), Parmigiano (Guatemala and United States), Manchego (Costa Rica), Mortadella (El Salvador) and Prosciutto (El Salvador). 2. Public access is available to the National Registry's trademark database; however, each search costs $20. Econoff spoke with several local intellectual property attorneys who indicated that many of the geographical indications listed in Reftel para. 5 may have been registered prior to 2002 when El Salvador updated its trademark law to meet TRIPS standards.
