UNCLAS ASUNCION 000832 SIPDIS STATE FOR WHA/BSC E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: PA, UNSC, UNGA SUBJECT: PARAGUAY ON SUPPORT FOR THE U.S. CANDIDATE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE On June 22, Charge met with Vice Minister of Foreign Relations, Ambassador Jose Martinez Lezcano to discuss the candidacy of Judge Thomas Buergenthal as a member of the International Court of Justice. Ambassador Martinez stated the GOP still owed us a substantive response to the U.S. dipnote on Buergenthal's candidacy and commented that a reply should be received shortly. He also signaled that it appeared the GOP would be in favor of Buergenthal's candidacy. Post will advise upon receipt of the Paraguay's dipnote and will report any substantive comments via septel.
