US embassy cable - 05JEDDAH1960

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

SUBJECT: EMERGENCY ACTION COMMITTEE - JEDDAH, KSA

Classified By: Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, Consul General,
           Reasons 4.1 (a) (b)

1. (S/NF) On 06/19/2005, the CG called a meeting of the
Emergency Action Committee to discuss the security situation
in Jeddah. In attendance were representatives from RSO, BPM,
CONS, IPC, DHS, USMTM and OPM/SANG.

2. (S/NF) BPM advised that a Lieutenant Colonel from the
Ministry of Interior had been gunned down yesterday morning
outside his residence in Mecca. The is no information at
this point to indicate whether the incident is related to
al-Qa'ida or ongoing terrorism in the country. The MOI are
continuing their investigation.

3. (S) The Consulate continues to move forward on
residential and physical security enhancements. On 06/22/05,
RPSO will arrive in Jeddah for discussions about the physical
security of the Consulate. A recent discovery of
deteriorating walls and grill work attached to the Chancery
is cause for concern. Over the weekend, Consulate
maintenance pulled off the grill work attached to one of the
Consulate's windows, with a fair amount of ease. The RSO
will inform DS and OBO of the recent findings septel.

4. (S) The EAC approved the social calendar, which included
an event at the end of the month. The Consulate has received
no new threats.
