US embassy cable - 05AMMAN4417

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

1. ( C ) A/DCM delivered reftel demarche June 2 to
Ambassador Rajab Suqairi, director of the Foreign Minister,s
private office. On the opening of new Arab
trade/representative offices in Tel Aviv, Suqairi said Jordan
would benefit from additional Arab missions in Tel Aviv, but
urged the United States to do more to press Israel for
&gestures8 that would make it easier for additional Arab
states to justify to their publics the opening of offices in
Tel Aviv. In reply, A/DCM reviewed the recent engagement of
the President and the Administration with both the Israelis
and Palestinians.

2. ( C ) On the Arab League boycott, Suqairi noted that
Jordan, in compliance with its peace treaty with Israel, does
not adhere to any aspect of the Arab boycott and has no
contact with the Central Boycott Office.

3. ( C ) On Magen David Adom, Suqairi noted the Jordanian
Society,s leading role in pressing for an international
conference. Jordan,s mission in Geneva had refrained from
joining Arab opponents of the conference, he said, and would
continue to do so. A/DCM pressed for active GOJ support of
the Jordanian Society,s efforts in future votes; Suqairi
undertook to bring the issue again to FM Qasrawi,s
attention.
