UNCLAS ANKARA 002889 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: TSPA, AORC, TU SUBJECT: USG PROPOSED UN COPUOS STSC SPACE DEBRIS MITIGATION GUIDELINES REF: STATE 90961 We delivered reftel demarche to MFA International Political Organizations Department Head Levent Sahinkaya and, separately, to Capt. Ergun Kocabicak in the Space Branch of the Turkish Air Force. Sahinkaya stated that space was an important issue and that Turkey wanted to contribute to the discussion about space. Sahinkaya told us that he works on space issues with colleagues in the Turkish General Staff (TGS) and the General Directorate for Technical and Scientific Research Institute (TUBITAK) and will seek opinions from these two entities in developing Turkey's position for the June 13 Vienna meeting. Sahinkaya said that Turkey is planning to create an interagency committee to deal with space issues. EDELMAN
