SUBJECT: CHILE SUPPORTS US APEC INITIATIVES ON NUCLEAR
ISSUES

1. (SBU) EconOff met yesterday with German King, Director,
and Graciela Fernandez, Deputy Director, of the APEC
Department of the Directorate of International Economic
Relations (DIRECON) to discuss the GOC position on the APEC
Radioactive Sources Initiative. King reiterated Chile's
support for the Code of Conduct. He then indicated he would
consult with Ambassador Winter of the MFA's Special Policy
Directorate on Chile's possible support for the Export/Import
Guidance. Winter handles counter-terrorism, corruption and
disarmament.
2. (SBU) EconOff also conveyed the importance of Chile's
current support for the Additional Protocol for nuclear
safeguards with the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA). EconOff mentioned that six countries have still not
concluded Additional Protocols with the IAEA. King indicated
that his team would bring up the issue with those countries
at future meetings.
3. (U) Embassy will follow up directly with Ambassador
Winter when he returns to the office the week of May 16.
