SUBJECT: AVIAN INFLUENZA: INVENTORY OF USG ACTIVITIES IN
SINGAPORE

This cable responds to request in Ref A. The U.S.-Singapore
Regional Emerging Diseases Intervention (REDI) Center is
currently coordinating all USG-related avian influenza (AI)
activities in Singapore. REDI Center Acting-Director Dr.
Richard Krause is working with the academic community in
Singapore to encourage AI discussions with regional entities,
including the University of Hong Kong. During an April
Biosafety/Biosecurity workshop sponsored by the REDI center,
Dr. Amar Bhat, Health and Human Services (HHS) Director,
Office of Asia and the Pacific, and Dr. Marie Haring Sweeney,
Health Attache, Hanoi, Vietnam, met with senior Ministry of
Health officials to discuss Singapore's AI preparedness and
regional concerns (Ref B). REDI Center will sponsor a
training workshop on epidemiology surveillance at the end of
this month which should include discussions on AI.
