C O N F I D E N T I A L KUWAIT 001054 SIPDIS FOR NEA E.O. 12958: DECL: 03/14/2015 TAGS: PREL, PGOV, ASEC, IZ, IR, KU SUBJECT: (C) DEMARCHE DELIVERED: DISSUADING IRAN FROM INTERFERING IN IRAQI POLITICS REF: STATE 41957 Classified By: Ambassador Richard LeBaron for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d). 1. (C) During a March 14 meeting, Ambassador raised reftel points with Shaykh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, President of Kuwait's National Security Bureau, stressing that formation of the Iraqi Transitional Government should occur free of interference from Iran. Shaykh Sabah Al-Khaled said the GOK had reports of substantial Iranian interference in Iraq prior to the elections, specifically efforts to have Sistani supporters listed on the ballots. He had, however, no recent information on interference, but stated Iran maintains an interest in Iraq's General Assembly and constitution. 2. (U) Post will seek to raise this matter with other GOK officials. 3. (U) Baghdad: Minimize considered. LEBARON
