US embassy cable - 05KUWAIT111

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY

REF: (A) 04 AMMAN 10314 (B) SECSTATE 275413 (BOTH

     NOTAL)

Classified By: Ambassador Richard LeBaron for reasons 1.5 (b) and (d)

1. (C) During a January 8 meeting on a variety of subjects
with the Prime Minister, the Ambassador raised continued
provision of GOK assistance to Jordan. Shaykh Sabah said the
Jordanian Prime Minister would be visiting Kuwait in a few
days and Kuwait would consider any request for support.
Ambassador raised the Jordanian request separately on January
7 with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Dr. Muhammad Al-Sabah.

2. (C) The Ambassador also raised Kuwaiti-Palestinian
relations. Shaykh Sabah made favorable comments about PA
candidate Mahmoud Abbas--"he knows how to settle problems."
On financial assistance to the Palestinians, he said that in
response to a request made during Mahmoud Abbas' visit to
Kuwait, the GOK had agreed to buy all the olive oil the
Palestinians could send. He stated that Kuwait would give the
oil to the local cooperative societies; whatever the co-ops
could not sell, the GOK would buy back.
