US embassy cable - 04ANKARA4593

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

SUBJECT: TURKS IN ACCORD WITH U.S. VIEW ON NEW AGENDA
COALITION INITIATIVE ON NON-STRATEGIC NUCLEAR WEAPONS

REF: STATE 163889

Classified By: PolMilCouns Timothy A. Betts for reasons 1.5 (b) and (d)
.

(C) PolMilCouns discussed reftel demarche Aug. 12 with MFA
Deputy Director General for Disarmament Haluk Ilicak. Ilicak
responded that Turkey was in accord with the U.S. position on
the New Coalition Agenda's initiative on non-strategic
nuclear weapons (NSNW), and fully agreed that NATO Allies
should discuss NSNW issues in the NATO context, not the UNGA
First Committee. Any bilateral consultations between the
U.S. and Turkey should, therefore, occur in Brussels, he said.
