C O N F I D E N T I A L THE HAGUE 001899 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: DECL: 07/27/2014 TAGS: PREF, NL, UN SUBJECT: REPLACEMENT FOR UNRWA COMMISSIONER GENERAL PETER HANSEN REF: SECSTATE 159245 Classified By: Andrew Schofer, PolCouns, reasons 1.4 (b) and (d) Poloff sent reftel demarche to MFA's Human Rights Director Karel van Kesteren July 27, and followed up July 28 with Marwienke Tillema, MFA's Political and Legal Affairs Division of the UN Department. Tillema appreciated the heads up that Hansen's term was expiring and said the post has not appeared on the list published in Brussels by the EU's CONUN (UN Affairs committee). She promised to check if the EU had any candidates in mind for the post and get back to us. Poloff emphasized reftel point that the USG wants to retain its current position on the UNRWA staff, which Marwienke duly noted. SOBEL
