US embassy cable - 04ABUJA1067

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

Mr. Colin L. Powell
United States Secretary of State
c/o Embassy of the United States of America
9 Mambilla Street
Maitama District
Abuja

Your Excellency

I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your recent letter on
the IAEA Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of
Radioactive Sources and to inform you that Nigeria is a state
party to the IAEA Convention on the Safety of Radioactive
materials. Nigeria identifies with the principles and
objectives of the IAEA Code of Conduct on Safety and Security
of Radioactive Sources which conforms with the objectives
enunciated in our Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act
of 1995, which established the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory
Autohrity (NNRA).

Nigeria is already working closely with the IAEA in the
implementation of the Code and indeed was one of the
supporters to the development of the Code. As a step to
implement the Code, the Federal Government invited the IAEA
Security Advisory Mission to visit Nigeria in May 2004 to
conduct security survey on nuclear and radioactive sources in
order to implement fully the provisions of the Code. Nigeria
is, therefore, committed to implementing the guidance
contained in the IAEA Code of Conduct on the Safety and
Security of Radioactive Sources.

Please accept, Mr. Secretary of State, the assurances of my
highest consideration.

Yours sincerely
/signature/
Ambassador Oluyemi Adeniji, CON

End text.
