Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

C O N F I D E N T I A L COLOMBO 000762 SIPDIS OFFICIAL INFORMAL FOR SA/INS E.O. 12958: DECL: 05/11/14 TAGS: AMGT, CE, MV, Maldives, Human Rights SUBJECT: OFFICIAL INFORMAL NUMBER 069 (05/11/04) Classified by DCM James F. Entwistle for reasons 1.5 (b) and (d). CONTENTS: GORM REQUESTS RELEASE OF GUANTANAMO DETAINEE GORM REQUESTS RELEASE OF GUANTANAMO DETAINEE -------------------------------------------- (C) On May 11, Mission received an official note from the Maldivian government again requesting the release of Maldivian citizen Ibrahim Fauzee, who is currently being detained in Guantanamo Bay. (The last USG communication on the issue to the GoRM was an early March 2004 note from the Department informing it that the decision had been made not to release the Maldivian at present.) Given the impending visit to Maldives by Assistant Secretary Rocca, we do not think the GoRM's May 9 note SIPDIS is a coincidence. We included this issue in our scenesetter cable for A/S Rocca late last week along with a proposed line of response. We'll review it with A/S Rocca before we take her over to Male'. A copy of the note is being sent to the Desk. (POL) LUNSTEAD
