C O N F I D E N T I A L ANKARA 002292 SIPDIS STATE FOR IO, EUR/SE AND NP E.O. 12958: DECL: 12/30/2013 TAGS: KNNP, PREL SUBJECT: UNSC DRAFT RESOLUTION ON NON-PROLIFERATION: TURKS TO SUPPORT REF: A) STATE 87268 (U) Classified by DCM Robert Deutsch. Reasons: 1.5 (B and D). (C) MFA Department Head for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Affairs Bulent Meric told deputy pol-mil counselor April 21 that Turkey fully supported the draft UNSCR on non-proliferation (reftel). Meric said the MFA recently instructed the TU mission to the UN to "take its cue from the EU," and support the resolution. Meric said it was important for non-Council and Council members to exchanges views on the draft resolution, and said he expected Turkish officials would attend the April 22 Open Council Meeting. Meric agreed it would be useful for Turkey to voice its support for the resolution during the Open Council Meeting, and offered to relay the request to his superiors within the MFA. EDELMAN
