US embassy cable - 04KUWAIT812

Disclaimer: This site has been first put up 15 years ago. Since then I would probably do a couple things differently, but because I've noticed this site had been linked from news outlets, PhD theses and peer rewieved papers and because I really hate the concept of "digital dark age" I've decided to put it back up. There's no chance it can produce any harm now.

SUBJECT:   TIP:  ADDITIONAL STATISTICS

1. We have belatedly received a few more statistics related
to the major vulnerable group in Kuwait as far as
Trafficking In Persons (TIP) is concerned. In 2003,
according to GOK statistics, there were criminal charges
pressed by the public prosecutor as follows:

-- 114 reported felonies committed by employers against
their domestic servants, up nearly 30% from 2002. Roughly
20% involved "sexual intercourse," 18% involved kidnapping,
and 12% involved physical assault. Roughly 75% of the
felonies in 2003 were committed against female domestics;
most against Philippine and Sri Lankan nationals;

-- 96 reported misdemeanors committed by employers against
their domestic servants, roughly 35% of which involved
physical assault and 15% involved "unintentional injury."
Nearly 60% of these crimes were committed against female
domestic workers; most against Indian nationals.
