C O N F I D E N T I A L ANKARA 006560 SIPDIS E.O. 12958: DECL: 10/20/2008 TAGS: PREL, KPAL, IS, TU SUBJECT: GOT RESPONSE TO UN ACTION ON THE MIDDLE EAST REF: SECSTATE 295444 (U) Classified by Polcouns John Kunstadter; reasons 1.5 b and d. (C) Poloff Oct. 20 delivered reftel talking points to Kemal Tuzun, acting head of the MFA Middle East Department. Tuzun said the GOT has not determined how it will vote on the resolutions concerning the Israeli security fence. He said the GOT is considering the USG position, but will likely follow the EU's lead if an EU consensus emerges. Tuzun noted that Turkey has in the past voted in favor of UNGA resolutions introduced by the Palestinians, while issuing a statement outlining the GOT position on terrorism and the Middle East peace process.
