CURRENT STATUS

1.  (U) THE WHO INVESTIGATIVE TEAM REPORTS NO NEW CASES OF 
AVIAN INFLUENZA IN HUMANS. CURRENTLY, THERE ARE 19 CONFIRMED 
HUMAN CASES OF H5N1, OF WHICH 14 HAVE DIED.

2.  (U) MONETARY AND IN-KIND SUPPORT CONTINUE TO BE PLEDGED. 
WHO IS THE INTERMEDIARY. NEWLY ANNOUNCED DONATIONS INCLUDE 
1,000,000 EUROS FROM THE EU, $15,000 FROM GERMANY, AND 
CLINICAL SUPPORT FROM HONG KONG.

3.  (U) U.S. CDC PERSONNEL CURRENTLY IN COUNTRY WILL RETURN 
HOME BY FEBRUARY 15, 2004.  A REPLACEMENT FOR THE DATA 
MANAGER IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE BY FEBRUARY 15. NO REQUEST FOR 
REPLACEMENT OF OTHER STAFF IS ANTICIPATED.

4.  (U) VIETNAM ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL NOT EXTEND CULLING TO 
ALL BIRDS WITHIN A 3KM PERIMETER OF AN INFECTED FLOCK AS PER 
THE WHO GUIDELINES FOR CULLING.

5.  (U) HOSPITALS CONTINUE TO REPORT CRITICAL SHORTAGES OF 
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) FOR MEDICAL PERSONNEL. 
SHORTAGES OF PPE CONTINUE AMONG CULLERS AND OTHERS WHO 
HANDLE POTENTIALLY INFECTED BIRDS. WHO REPORTS THAT THE 
FIRST SHIPMENTS OF PPE WILL GO EXCLUSIVELY TO THOSE CULLING. 
LATER SHIPMENTS WILL BE APPORTIONED TO HEALTH CARE SETTINGS.
